Staff benefits

Working at Massey gives you access to a wide range of benefits from both the University and external providers. From opportunities to study to extra University holidays, and on-campus gym facilities to discounted health insurance, there are many advantages to becoming part of the Massey team.

Staff study

As part of your overall personal and professional development you can choose to undertake papers and courses for approved Massey study. Tuition fees may be paid for by your employer provided that you:

  • Meet the NZ Government criteria for domestic fees rates (that is, NZ citizen or permanent resident, Australian citizen or citizen of any countries with which special arrangements have been made); and
  • Have a term of employment of at least three years duration or are employed as a Graduate Assistant or Assistant Lecturer; and
  • Have made satisfactory progress in any previous semesters when your employer has met tuition fees.

Leave

In addition to minimum leave entitlements as defined by New Zealand employment law, in many cases, (depending on your particular employment agreement) Massey offers a number of additional entitlements. Further information is available at the link below

Superannuation

Massey University offers the New Zealand Universities Superannuation Scheme, comprising of two schemes and also meets our obligation to the Governments KiwiSaver Superannuation Scheme. Depending upon your eligibility Massey will make contributions of up to 6.75% to the New Zealand Universities Superannuation Scheme or up to 2% to Kiwisaver.

The Universities of New Zealand voluntary workplace insurance plan

Life and disability insurance is designed to provide financial security for you and your family when you are unable to earn an income through illness, a serious change in health or if you die prematurely. This special plan has been established in conjunction with the Universities of New Zealand to offer you concessions and savings. New staff members who enrol within 30 days of commencing employment at Massey have automatic acceptance with no medical questions (some conditions apply).


Southern Cross Health insurance

Southern Cross health insurance is available for you and your immediate family at reduced rates through the Massey University group scheme.

Eye tests

After one year of employment with Massey, if you are engaged in computer-related work for at least half of a full time position, you shall be entitled to an eye test at our expense. Further tests shall be provided at no less than two yearly intervals upon application through your manager. Depending on your circumstances you may also qualify for the cost of standard lenses/contact lenses and/or spectacle frames.

EAP services

Massey University has contracted an independent organisation, Employee Assistance Programme Services (EAP), to provide University staff with access to appropriate professional/specialist assistance for a wide range of issues which can affect work performance. This confidential service is available to all staff of 0.5 FTE or greater who have an employment agreement of 12 months or more.

Internal training

Massey University is committed to continuous training and development for our staff. Various training opportunities exist throughout the University that staff, with their manager's support, are able to access. Professional Development is available to support teaching, research, leadership development and technology.

Massey gym

Massey has gyms on all three campuses and offers competitive discount membership rates to all staff and students. The Manawatu Massey Recreation Centre & Fuel Fitness has been awarded 'Best Gym in the Manawatu' for three years running. This can be accredited to excellent facilities and the wide range of activities on offer, including squash, tennis, badminton, basketball, social sports leagues and LesMills group exercise classes. As each of the campus gyms offer different discounts, please visit Recreation and Training.

Bus services

Massey University provides a free bus service to students and staff travelling to the Palmerston North campuses from within Palmerston North. All staff with permanent staff ID cards are able to use this service by presenting their staff ID card to the bus driver when they get on the bus heading to or from the campus. Westpac Bank

As a government employee, Westpac New Zealand offers a 'Government Employee Pack' in which you can enjoy lower rates on many aspects of your personal banking. Benefits include no establishment fee and a discount off Westpac's standard interest rates on personal lending requirements; discounts on home, contents, vehicle or boat, and life insurance premiums; and home loan benefits. National Bank

The National Bank offers Massey staff a 'Working solutions' banking pack that provides special discounts on interest rates for National Bank home loans and savings on fees on a range of products including savings accounts and credit cards. Bank of New Zealand information

The Bank of New Zealand offers Massey staff a “Work Perks” package providing special deals on a range of banking services including transaction accounts, home loans, credit cards, insurances and investments. For more details visit your local BNZ Store or view the brochure below:

Budgeting services

Massey has an agreement with an e-Centre based company, Who Stole My Money (WSMM) who are a NZ made, online personal budgeting tool that is simple, practical and designed to make managing your money a breeze. Massey's agreement with this organisation enables you to free, full access to WSMM's services.

  • MASSEY ALUMNI: Massey University clothing and accessories.
  • ADVANTAGE COMPUTERS: PC's, notebooks, software and computer consumables.
  • BUDGET CAR & TRUCK RENTALS: Massey pricing applies.
  • DTSL: Mac computers, software and consumables.
  • FARMLANDS: Agricultural Supplies, pet food, etc. Massey pricing applies for cash purchases.
  • NOEL LEEMING: Electrical goods, appliances, etc.
  • OFFICEMAX: Stationery, office supplies, office furniture.
  • ORBIT TRAVEL: Travel and discounted travel insurance at Massey price per day.
  • PLACEMAKERS: General hardware, tools, building supplies.
  • VEHICLE TESTING NEW ZEALAND (VTNZ): Discounts on Warrant of Fitness costs.
